Instruction Chain
memory game for kids 5+
Hear several instructions at once, repeat them, then do them in order.
In short
Instruction Chain is a listening game with no materials. Your child gets several small tasks at once, repeats them and then does them in order. It suits kindergartners who like to zip around the house and think running little errands is exciting. Along the way, your child practices keeping several things in mind, following directions and planning a route ahead.
What you need
- Nothingjust the two of you
How to play
- Give several instructions in one go: “bring me something red, put a spoon on the chair, hop back”.

See the printable packWhen it fits
- When your child is wandering around the house bored and would like a quick game with you.
- On cold days when there is not much to do outside and you don't want to set anything up.
- At Grandma and Grandpa's or visiting friends, since the game works anywhere without materials.
What your child practices
- Working memory
- Following directions
- Planning
Kids need to hold several things in mind all the time: getting dressed in the right order, setting the table or hearing what comes next at preschool. In school, directions like “take out your notebook, open to the page, write the date” follow. Thinking ahead about the route saves detours. Instruction Chain turns this into a game where forgetting is simply part of the fun.
Works well before or after
Before, I Packed My Suitcase warms up the memory. Afterward, a calm activity like Shape Breathing fits well.
